How to Instagram Paris Like A Parisian

How to Instagram Paris Like A Parisian

Ever wonder how when you travel you get so overwhelmed by the beauty and newness of places that you often forget to focus on the little details? You end up taking that classic picture of the Eiffel Tower that has been posted a billion times, there a bunch of smiling tourists in the background and truthfully, no real "Parisian" would ever fathom even taking a similar photo. On this trip, I really wanted to emphasize the hidden beauty, the less explored and be one with the locals! This gives you a new perspective on the city, allows you to see it behind native eyes, and yes-- you're Instagram feed will look a lot more fancy and distinguished!

Here's are five ways to Instagram Paris (or really any city) like a local.

How to Instagram Paris Like A Parisian

1. Play with angles.
Like I said, everyone has seen a picture of the Eiffel Tower. So how can you shoot it in a way that's different, yet exciting and still recognizable? Take an interesting photo that focuses on new angles by snapping just the top portion of the landmark, or shoot interesting buildings from new perspectives (i.e.: peaking out of a beautiful row of buildings). Cropping the buildings, or showcasing just one aspect of it instantly makes the photo more dramatic, mysterious and a little romantic.

Versailles; How to Instagram Paris Like A Parisian

How to Instagram Paris Like A Parisian2. Get the details.
The Hall of Mirrors in Versailles is absolutely breathtaking, but I can guarantee if you try to take a shot of the whole room your photo will be crowded with tourists listening to headsets.  Focus your shot on a grouping of the chandeliers or a partial shot of the mirrors. I mean, even the ceiling is gorgeous, snap that while you're at it. The same goes for taking photos in the city. There is so much beauty to be found. Think of all the ornate doors, door handles, and balconies. Did you know most courtyards are just left open during the week for deliveries and workers? I found some of the most beautiful places just wandering behind closed doors! The big picture may be beautiful, but they know you're there anyway. Try going for the less discovered smaller picture and really hone in on the beauty.

3. Avoid the overplayed.
Yes-- Cafe de Flore is a Parisian establishment. But seriously on every corner is a stunning cafe where you can sit outside, enjoy a noisette and listen to the allure of the French language. Why not head on over to La Palette, which is just down the street, enjoy your time in a potentially more breathtaking setting. You'll feel the true Parisian vibes and are guaranteed a less rushy time. There are countless boulangeries, patisseries, and restaurants that are just waiting to be discovered. I discovered the world-renowned Meert waffles by just walking by! And it was that much more special because I didn't have any preconceived notion of the place. This was also the case for Popelini. The chou was the most amazing and finding it on my own was a great pleasure. Don't get trapped in by the trends and discover the unknown. Then snap it!

4. OOTD the location.
There is no need to search out any boring old white walls here! Every inch of this city is stunning. Just hop on any street corner and get someone to take what I call the "up-down" shot (where the photographer aka partner/mother/bestie gets to ground level and snaps a photo looking up) and you madame are guaranteed to look like a true Parisienne! I love showcasing the setting, landmarks and interesting points with an OOTD. Find a spot that accentuates the aesthetic of your outfit and showcase the city too!

5.Accessorize it.
I know while travelling it's unlikely that you will bring along odds and ends with you, but I'm sure you'll have your card holder, sunglasses or a fabulous lip stick on hand. Use these props to your advantage. Pull out your accessories and style the shot by incorporating a bit of yourself it in. Make it  your own, otherwise, it's just another coffee and croissant.

How to Throw a Thanksgiving Picnic

Kelly's Bake Shoppe- Ontario gluten free vegan bakery, Thanksgiving Picnic for two, picnic essentials

When you think of Thanksgiving get-togethers usually you think "evening time, indoors". There might be a fire burning and a turkey in the oven. However, Brandon and I will be away for Thanksgiving this year, and rarely do we do things the conventional way. This year with the help of Kelly's Bake Shoppe we decided to have a romantic Thanksgiving themed picnic for two. Who am I kidding... I decided we were having it and he so graciously went along with my idea!

Pre Paris

White tiered statement sleeve sweater, blue denim, leopard belt, red bag, paris inspired, White mules

I officially cannot contain my excitement. We leave for Santorini and Paris in days, people! I can't even tell you how long we have been itching to get away. This year has just been torpid and we are in need to get away. I have been outfit planning for Europe for too long now. However... I'm only bringing a carry-on! Am I crazy? I may be. The cities are so different, both in temperatures and in style but I'm going to do my best to incorporate pieces I can transition from both climates. I have to say Joëlle's carry-on packing guide has been a huge help! Neutrals, neutrals and more neutrals! It makes it so easy to mix and match.

A few weeks ago we headed out to dinner and I was in full-blown Paris mood. Blue, red and white. A sleek ponytail, a red lip and a leopard belt to accent. What do you think? Did I nail it? Be sure to follow along on our travels next week, mes amies!

Glamorous Travel Beauty

Charlotte Tilbury- Paris travel beauty/skincare essentials ; magic cream, lip lustres, look in a palette, pillow talk, filmstar, wonderglow, goddess clay mask

When I think Parisian beauty, I think effortless, timeless, yet glamorous. As I mentioned I am only bringing a carry-on bag for my travels, which is most definitely limiting the amount of beauty/skincare products I will be bringing. This is oh so difficult for a beauty junkie like me, but it needs to be done! In that case, I am focusing on the essentials. The products I know I can rely on time after time, but taken up a notch, because, after all, this is Paris! If there is one brand I turn to for glamorous beauty it's Charlotte Tilbury. Even the casing is seductive. So, here they are, my favourite Charlotte Tilbury products that are without a doubt getting stuffed into my ready to burst suitcase.

3 Ways to Style a Denim Skirt

White & Pink stripe top, Le Chateau denim stretch skirt, Louise et Cie leopard flats, Kate Spade Cedar Maise bag pink ; fall style

This pink stripe top was a summer favourite. I often paired it with crisp white jeans, or white shorts, basically all of the white! But ladies and gents... who am I kidding, you are probably all ladies... fall is quickly approaching and I am looking for all the ways to transition my summer pieces to becoming fall appropriate. I think we all are.

A good dark denim skirt is pretty much the answer to what to pair with all those summer blouses. It instantly adds a hardy texture and tones down the brightness or summery-ness (I may have just made that word up) of the blouse. To really hone in on the fall vibes I paired this outfit with my favourite leopard flats. Fall always has me dreaming up pattern play, especially with leopard prints. It must be the neutral colours that have me associating it with the season.

But seriously, denim skirts are just great pieces in general. I contemplated the versatility of them for the longest time. When I finally got one I couldn't stop wearing it! A basic oversized tee, a knit, a blouse... you name it, it works!

Here are 3 ways to style that denim skirt for fall:

1. Pair the denim skirt with your summer blouses to get you through the transitional days.

2. When fall hits hard tuck an oversized knit or sweater into the front and pair with a cropped bootie.

3. Tuck in a tight fitted turtleneck and pair with a chunky metal buckled belt and knee-high bootie.

Black & White Timeless

White Culotte Jumpsuit, Black, Austin drop earrings, The IT black camera bag, Old Navy sandals, NYC blogger, Bryant Park

I probably say this every year... but this trip to NYC has to have been my favourite! This year my mom and I stayed three nights instead of two, and it gave us so much more time to leisurely roam, explore, and enjoy! There is never a shortage of things to do in the city and this year we did some things that we always wanted to do but never have. For starters, we roamed around the MET before it opened. I have a friend that works at the museum and she SO graciously took an hour out of her workday to give us a private tour of the museum. It was INSANE. I cannot even begin to describe all the exhibits, and all the feels I experienced. Even if you don't love persuing around galleries, the MET is just not to be missed. I mean they have fulled transported The Temple of Dendur inside the mesuem, and The Roof Garden has the most stunning view of the city.

After an early morning exploring The Met, we headed to The New York City Public Library, another place we had been wanting to visit for a few years. The architecture of the building is just gorgeous (I'm sure you remember the scenes from the SATC movie re the Carrie and Big wedding flop), think huge marble lions, crystal chandeliers, not to mention the 50 million books it houses, and don't forget to look up to see the ceiling murals. Once we had our fill of history chasing we headed back outdoors into Bryant Square. The grin on my face says it all! Truly happy to be in a beautiful city with my beautiful momma.

White and black are just as timeless as the pieces of history we exposed ourselves to on this morning. My outfits in NYC are often minimal but powerful. I transformed my white culotte jumpsuit with a black tank top and a pair of drop earrings. Still city classy but effortless.  And the comfy sandals are just the key to walking miles on end.

Have you ever been inside The Met or of NYC Public Library? Promise me you'll add them to your list.

Essential Vibes

Keds Ace Leather White White, Tuck Shop Trading Co Toronto t-shirt, red flare mini skirt, Poppy & Peonies crossbody, Le Chateau black collarless blazer, summer to fall essentials, EGPR

There is something about mini skirts and all white sneakers... Am I right?! Totally tennis chic. AND THEN you throw on a blazer and you just feel bad ass! This past weekend the weather was on our side. More than on our side, it was pure bliss. Pure summer! I live for hot, steamy summer days and nights, and even though this weekend was technically the start to fall I could not help pulling out some key summer essentials to take me straight on to fall. A mini skirt to combat the heat, but in a colour that is definitely autumn-appropriate, a shoe that rocks any season, and an illuminating brush that will give any highlighter a run for its money.

NYC: What I'm Packing

It's that time of year again and I could not be more excited. My annual mother-daughter trip to NYC is just a week away and I'm already making a list and checking it twice. Last year we traded in our trip in September for a family trip in August for a cousin's wedding. It was lovely, but trooping around NYC with my brothers was no easy feat. Let's just say there were less cute cocktails involved than I would have liked. Which is why I'm suuupppper excited for this year's trip. We always go in September as it is around the time of San Gennaro Festival (read more on that here). Here's an inside peek into what I'll be packing along for this year's trip. I am thinking double duty neutral fashion, minimal but effective beauty products, and skincare essentials. Follow along on Instagram for more updates!

Blue and Yellow

Target yellow pleat midi skirt, Blue strapless ruffle top, blue clutch, Sam Edelman sequin pumps, blue drop earrings, pale blue earring, Transitioning to fall with Yellow

Who would have thought I'd wear yellow and blue... together! When I first saw this skirt I loved the pleats and the way they separated at the bottom. But would I ever wear it? After all it's yellow. I took it home anyways (because the price couldn't be beat) and I can report that I can't stop wearing it! Pink on top, blue on top, paired with black and white stripes, it's becoming an addiction. I love how the colour has an effect to instantly make any outfit fall appropriate. I wore this outfit to an evening of back to back events last week and I'm so excited to keep transitioning it for fall. Burgundy and plum here I come!

Entrance Way & DIY Palm Print Bench

DIY Palm Print Bench, Blogger Entrance Way, Interior Design, Palm Print Leopard, Homesense

Our place is by no means fully decorated. We didn't want to rush into buying pieces or furnishing every inch of the rooms with pieces that we didn't love. But I did want our entrance way to be complete. It's the first room I see when I walk into the house, and the last one I see when I leave the house. I wanted it to be inviting for guests and to give off happy fresh vibes. When we came into the house the paint colour was not allowed to be changed. My thoughts were "UGH- so much green!". If I had my way it would be a beautiful shade of... you guessed it, white! So I started thinking what is green and beautiful. Palm trees, duh! I love the look of leopard and palm print together, so I when I found this chair at HomeSense I immediately started looking for a palm print bench.  I found tons! However, for $199? No thanks.

My mother so graciously gave me her old wooden bench and B and I got to working. I sourced the fabric at EuroFab (a fabulous fabric shop on Queen Street) and picked up a bed cover to act as the cushion. I sanded and painted the base of the bench, then we put it all together. I love that it opens and acts as a storage unit too. Overall we saved ourselves a pretty penny and I think the entrance way looks way more complete! I'd love to hear your thoughts on this little project. If you are interested here is how we put it together:

Flowering in Fuchsia

Fuchsia floral crop top, fuchsia satin midi skirt, B Brian Atwood Astor pink heels, Pink drop earrings, Summer Style, fuchsia colour block

I wanted nothing more than to frolic around in the most summery outfits I could put together this Labour Day long weekend, however, the weather was not on my side! Friday night we headed out for date night... and it sure had been a while with all the craziness that has been going on lately. We chose a local sushi restaurant and indulged in some sake to toast for the long weekend. I pretty much said "f the weather" and went with my initial decision to sport all the summery; a white, fuchsia and purple crop top, a fuchsia satin midi and what could possibly be my most favourite shoes right now, these B Brian Atwood block heels (on sale!). They are beyond comfortable, and the colours are big, bold and beautiful.

The Day Our Worlds Changed & Coping With Loss

Coping with Loss-- Joe's Jeans light denim, Forever 21 beige ribbed crop top, Rebecca Minkoff white bucket bag, Old Navy gold sandals

I contemplated posting these photos for a long time. The memories associated with this day are bittersweet. My mom and I had a planned staycation at a hotel in the city a few months ago. It started off fabulous. A day of shopping around town, lunching at Early Bird, then we checked into the hotel where we settled in for some drinks by the pool. The night was off to a great start, dinner at Gusto 101 and ice cream and cookies to go. Then we got the call in the middle of the night. Someone very dear to us had passed. It was like the world came to a stop. We quickly packed up our things and bolted out of there.  The past week and half have been a whirlwind. There are no words to describe loss.

(If I was going) Back to School Essentials

Back to school essentials- Thursday Plantation peppermint oil, Benefit Punch Pop, smashbox, Always X Always weekly note pad, Hobbry, Waterever Forever, Indigo, Saje, Bando

So the whole "back to school" thing may not be a reality for me this year, but that doesn't mean I still don't have fun looking at all the back to school flyers and get excited about all the new stationery and notebook releases! I always loved back to school shopping. I would sift through flyers for hours on end and plan out exactly what I would need. Then I would set up my pencil case, backpack, and even my closet. Ah, the memories! I still get all giddy when I talk to my little cousins about back to school. It's always bittersweet because summer is coming to an end, but I love how it totally gives you a sense of revival. This year, I'm still prepping for back to school, just in a different way! I'm doing a huge purge-- I've already started with my closet and I'm giving my office supplies a refresh. There are a few things that I'd definitely be packing in my school bags this year so let's get to it...

Denim Days

American Eagle distressed denim, white scoop neck jumpsuit, nude vest, snakeskin flats

What do you think your man would pull out of your closet if you asked him to put together your outfit? Last weekend, half jokingly, I asked B to pick out my outfit, and he took the task seriously. He went into my closet and pulled out the most classic yet simple outfit. The weather was dreary and chilly and it turns out this was the most perfect outfit for the occasion-- a matinee movie and a day date of errand running. After he pulled out a white tee and distressed denim I amped up the outfit with a long vest and a punchy lip. I can't deny that he nailed the task! Sometimes the most simple outfits are the best. He then proceeded to pull out his own pair of Levi's denim and a white tee. I thought it was the cutest. Matchy matchy on a Monday anyone?

Do you have a go-to simple, yet classic outfit?

How To Stop Selling Yourself Short

Terre Bleu Lavender Farm, How to stop selling yourself short, summer style

Yesterday someone asked me if I was a designer. Immediately I responded no, referring to my 9-5 conference planning job. After chatting with this person and talking a bit about what I love and my blog, I came to the realization that I am a designer. It may not be what I went to school for or my so called career, but I design all the time. Whether it's in my home, with my outfits, or a makeup look, I am designing. This person then went on about how she is never wrong with her intuition and that she knew I had a knack for the creative/design world. She also went on to say how special this gift is and when something comes more natural to you that we often forget it is not like that for everyone. Just like I cannot perform acupuncture, some people can not fathom putting outfits together. Sometimes we think that we all have the same innate knowledge, but we do not.  No one on this planet has the same eye as you do. You see things differently than everyone else and your perceptions are what makes you unique.

I really took this to heart and started reflecting on our conversation more and more. I realized that you don't need to have a degree in something to be something. You don't need to go to school to become a master at something and you are so much more than a piece of paper or what you do for a living. We cannot sell ourselves short. Do you love to bake? You're a baker! Do you love to bicycle? Then you're a cyclist! It's so important to not put these limitations on ourselves as they will just end up impeding on our dreams.

Terre Bleu Lavender Farm, How to stop selling yourself short, summer style

So how do we stop selling ourselves short?

Acknowledge your successes. Do not brush things off and do not play down your accomplishments. When someone says you put together a fabulous outfit do not just brush it off and say "oh, this old thing!". Say thank you and really appreciate that yes you did put together a fabulous outfit. Accept the praise in all walks of life.

Forgot the word "just". We all do it. I "just" write a blog, or I am "just" working here. Um, hello! Do you know how much goes into "just" writing a blog? The workload is insane. And you're not "just" working here. You are gaining valuable experience every day to take you where you need to go.

Do something every day to get you closer to your dreams. Take the little steps to get you where you want to be. Don't say no to opportunities. Take something out of the suckiest of situations and put yourself out there.

Accept that you are so much more. You do not need to compare yourself to your own expectations or someone else's experience. We all need to stop selling ourselves short and focus on our current achievements and future successes.
