The Experience Gift Guide

Is it just me or do you always want to give the best gift?! Something that totally wows and makes your recipient smile from ear to ear? I always try and think of gifts that will last. I love focusing on less material type gifts and more experience based. The possibilities are endless! Because it really is so exciting to have something to look forward to after the holidays! I'm rounding up some fabulous experience type gifts that you should consider this holiday season. It's also great because most of them can be ordered online and printed out. Then you can get creative and wrap them up all fancy. Just don't put a gift card in a huge box... so over that one!

Dermalogica ProSkin Treatment-- there is a reason this isn't called a facial, but a skin treatment. The professionals at Dermalogica are so knowledgeable on skincare! They tailor a completely personalized and customized experience based on your skin needs.  Basically, they tell you exactly what you face needs, they use the most advanced products and get you set up for healthy skin. For someone that is new to skin treatments, or a lover of them, this is the perfect indulgence. So often we are reluctant to spend money on treatments that are perceived as luxuries, but this one is a necessity to really get a deep clean and a rundown on what your skin truly needs (before it's too late)!

Floral Workshops-- a night of fun and florals! Sounds perfect to me! This is such a great gift idea. I mean you get together with some fabulous ladies, learn all the tricks of floral arranging and get to leave with a bouquet you made yourself! These are skills you will have your life and for the one who loves crafting, florals and just is a purveyor of pretty things, the experience will be the best! Wild North Florals has some of the best workshops on how to keep houseplants alive, centrepiece making and DIY terrariums! Also, check out Bloom School.

Cleanse-- after the holidays we could all use a re-set from all the parties, wine, food, and indulgences. It can get to be a lot! I love the Body Reset cleanse from The Fix + Co. because it's not a juice cleanse. If you are like me you just need to chew! I love that this one incorporates meals into the mix that are plant-based, healthy, homemade and super delicious.

Event/Outing-- there are so many events happening around the city. All you need to do is pursue through StubHub or Ticketmaster. Think concerts, sporting matches, even the Jays season pass. I love gifting tickets because it really gives you something to look forward to. And you get to do it together! Another great option is a flight, or gift card to a travel service that you know they'll use. Nothing is better than having a trip to look forward to!

What are some of your favourite alternative gift ideas? I'd love to know!

Easy & Effortless Holiday Entertaining + GIVEAWAY

Easy & Effortless Holiday Hosting, Zwilling Cheese Board and Knife Giveaway, Kelly's Bake Shoppe, The Fix + Co

Holiday hosting... it really is one of my favourite things to do. This year I found myself straying away from the endless planning and all the little details. I love it but it gets so exhausting sometimes. Especially when the days just seem to sneak up on you. You end up running yourself ragged before the event has even started. I didn't want to let that happen this year for my annual girls Christmas party. I wanted to focus on the minimal, and let the conversation, feelings and true meaning of the night speak for itself.

Holiday hosting doesn't have to be intimidating. This year I wanted to show how I cut the frills and fancy and focused on the simple and easy, while not comprising on style and taste! Just a few steps and you can do the same. In turn, you'll have tons more time for your loved ones and enjoy the moments leading up the get-together.

Here's how I made the night hosting easy and effortless in 4 steps:

1. Skip the elaborate dinner and make a charcuterie board. They literally take 10 minutes to put together. I always ask B to run to the store and pick out his favourites since he is a cheese connoisseur. I focus on the little extras-- the crackers, the garnishes, the cute additions. You can put them together in no time whatsoever and they have such great impact, and there is something for everyone. Some veggies, a bit of fruit to mix up the flavours and some nuts to add a crunch. Remember sweet and savoury is key! I pulled out my massive cutting board from Zwilling and went to town, but you can use any size and make it your own! That's the beauty of them. There is no right or wrong way. Just make sure you have a proper cheese knife on hand!

2. Go minimal with the decor. I've done my fair share of the fancy themes... we've done glitzmas and rustic, but this year I went extremely minimal, and it made such an elegant impact. Some simple evergreens (literally cut off from the trees outside), a few candles and my classic gold chargers all came together beautifully. What helps, even more, to add to the decor is having great serving ware. I love Zwilling for this; their styles are so timeless! I usually stick to white and clear and let the food speak for itself.

3. Pick up ready-made eats & treats. The biggest misconception people have is that you can't have quality and delicious food pre-made, or found at a reasonable price. There are so many local eateries that offer catering services that you don't need to stress out over making everything! The Fix + Co put together some of their amazing platters for me that was indeed homemade and delicious. I love knowing that they use premium and local ingredients and that the food is plant-based and organic. They supplied us with an amazing vegan nut cheese (that actually tasted like pizza), vegetable samosas, and a delicious assortment of their sweets (raw balls, chocolate brownies and banana nut cookies).

Speaking of treats!!! It would not be the holidays without a little something from Kelly's Bake Shoppe. Especially my favourite ginger molasses cookie. You guys... I can't even. I ate 3 in one day! They are so good. Everyone loves a treat from Kelly's and I love that they pride themselves on being the healthier bakery, offering vegan, gluten-free, egg-free, dairy-free and peanut free goodies! The Christmas menu is one of my faves of the year! It consists of cupcakes such as pumpkin pie, hot cocoa, gingerbread and lemon, and other goodies like candy cane donuts, and double chocolate peppermint cookies. Mmm just thinking about them is making me want to stop everything I'm doing and place an order for delivery.

Both places deliver making it even easier to host and offer quality food to your guests. No dishes required.

*If you want to wow your guests with an after dinner treat with a bit of a show, make an affogato! Scoop a couple scoops of vanilla bean ice cream into your glass dessert bowl and pour a shot of freshly made espresso over it.

4. Stick to one personalized touch. Don't go crazy trying to pull out all the stops, and this step is totally optional! There are so many simple ways you can show your guests you appreciate them coming without going over the top. Sometimes I try to do too much-- name cards, favours, wine glass tags, etc. But no. This year I opted for something so simple and I thought it was the sweetest gesture! I made DIY Christmas crackers that doubled as seating cards for the table.  I filled the inside with little goodies like candy canes, chocolates and lip sticks. You can find the whole tutorial in my newsletter (subscribe here).

Fringe Cardigan Cool

Gap Loop-Fringe Cardigan, AE denim, Zara boots, grey, Sophie Hulme, How to style a cardigan

I was obsessed with this loop fringe cardigan (on sale!!) from the moment I saw it. But I waited it out... a long while! Finally, when Black Friday rolled around and I saw it at 50% off there was no turning back. I love the relaxed, easy fit and that it feels perfectly tailored to my body. It sits at the hip so it's not too short and on warmer days I can totally get away with wearing it as a light jacket. Do you have any pieces that make you feel instantly cool? I feel like this cardi does that! There is something about it that is kinda crisp, yet sophisticated and paired with a black leather ankle bootie I am ready to rock. Cardigans usually get a bad rep. They can feel stuffy, too boring and unexciting. But if this one shows you anything it's that they can be chic, fun and wicked cool.

So, how to look chic while wearing a cardigan? Here's what I do:

Statement cardigan. Forget the argyle print and go for something totally out there. There are plenty of ways to do this, too! Loop fringe? Yes. Completely oversized and to your knees paired with a mini skirt? Yes. Chunky knits, vibrant colours and patterns all work!

Wear it like a blazer. Think casual and I just threw this on. Pair it with a thin t-shirt underneath and layer with a stack of thin gold necklaces. The longer the cardi the better. I love the look of high waisted denim, a crop top and a long cardigan.

Treat it like a button down. Just make sure it has buttons first (lol), and do them all up. Wear nothing underneath for a semi-risque look. Or try leaving the bottom button undone. Kinda says I'm here to party.

How do you style your cardigans? Do you reserve them for strictly office purposes or will you bring them out on the town?

A Dress for Every Occassion

One thing I love about the holidays is all the fun and festive affairs. But with all the holiday parties come all the holiday party outfits, and that can either be super exciting or super stressful. I like to make it fun and wear things I wouldn't normally wear. I'm talking faux fur stoles, sequins, and lots of lace! Actually... I do wear all these things on the regular, but together makes it all the more festive! I can't wait to wear this dress I bought for Paris this season. I love the lace overlay and the embroidered flowers. If it gets cold I plan to throw on a tight black turtleneck underneath or throw on a pair of tights. One and done! In case you need some holiday party dress inspiration I've rounded up a few favourites, something for every occasion! A knit turtleneck dress for the office luncheon, a cocktail number for a night out celebrating, and some fun jumpsuits. Who doesn't love jumpsuits! What are you planning on wearing to your events? Any ideas yet?

Accessorizing with Jewel Tones

Wearing Jewel Tones, Sophie Hulme, Denim, Leather Coat, emerald earrings

I've never been one to dabble in the jewel tones. You guys know me... I'm all about the pastels. But, I love the look of jewel tones! There's the emerald green, the amethyst, ruby, topaz-- they are so beautiful! So royal and deep.  I was gifted these earrings by a loved one for a very special reason and ever since then, I've been drawn to the colours more and more.  You're probably thinking "where!". But if you look closely you'll see I'm starting off slow! At least it's a start.  I love that in adding a topaz coloured scarf, a pair of emerald earrings, and a ruby bangle I instantly adding drama to an otherwise simple, go-to, outfit. Breaking into new colours seems like it's becoming a bit of a trend for me! If there are any colours you are hesitant about trying out you need to read this post. It's all about colour combining and embracing the unconventional.

What's your take on jewel tones? Do you dig 'em? (pun intended)

Winter White And Festive Feelings

Bloor Yorkville, Parajumpers hat, winter white, winter style, red and white, holiday style.
I am in full-blown holiday mode. The tree is up, the pine scented candles are lit and the lips have officially been painted red. This weekend B and I hit up the Bloor-Yorkville area to begin our holiday shopping. It so happened to coincide with the tree lighting ceremony that takes place in Yorkville. Unfortunately, the ceremony was cut short due to the intense rainfall but we made the best of it. I wore this Parajumpers hat what is probably the warmest hat on the planet and it kept me nice and dry all evening long. Some of our favourite places to hit up in Yorkville are Holt Renfrew, Anthropologie and Nespresso. I love browsing all the cosmetics, fragrances and accessories at Holts, then we always make a stop to stock up on our coffee capsules and enjoy an espresso while we stroll around the park. After dinner, we came home, put on the hockey game and enjoyed the evening. It was a lovely kick off to the holiday season and I can't wait for more days like this to come! Do the holidays make you all giddy and excited? Next time I swear we're watching Love Actually...

Headed to Yorkville? Check out some of my favourite spots below!

The Best Stocking Stuffers

Okay. It's getting real now. We are less than a month away from Christmas and I need to get my butt in gear. Although I was super quick to decorate the house and get into the holiday spirit I have yet to start my Christmas shopping. This weekend I did not really take advantage of any Black Friday deals! I was kind of holding out until Cyber Monday. Now that it's here and I've started my list of gifts to buy I am ready to check back on these items and see what I can snag! Most of these items below are on major sale or include free shipping! Since I have tons of girly kris kringle gifts to buy I've rounded up my faves so you can shop too! Any faves? I wouldn't mind any of these wrapped up in my oversized pink faux fur stocking.

Sure there are some main etiquette rules we all should follow, i.e.: don’t show up late (the host puts so much effort into the evening and is expecting you at a certain time), offer to help as much as possible but stay out of the hosts way when they are on a mission, and bring something as a gesture of your gratitude. Knited Neutral

Frank + Oak women's sweater, socks, Made For Good Living, Vintage Chanel, Socks & Pumps
Chunky knits and dainty jewels; two opposites that I've been loving as of late. I love how they create such a great balanced yet juxtaposed look when paired together. While in Montreal last week I re-discovered Frank + Oak. They recently opened two stand-alone women's stores (one in Montreal and one in Toronto), which is huge news! They offer some great, elevated basics that are perfect to dress up or down. Just like this chunky knit.

How to Combine Colours- Bisous Blouse

Lips blouse, red beret, blue lemon bag paris, leopard coat, zara shoes, pombons

Red, pink and mauve... can it be worn all together? I'm here to tell you that it can! Especially when you blouse is packed with kisses in every colour. Most of us are so reluctant to pair red and pink together (I used to be) but it actually makes such a striking colour combination. It's different, bold and just plain fun. And to think I could have stopped at the boundary-breaking colour pairing, by why would I? I threw on my favourite leopard top coat and my barret for an even more playful vibe. Sometimes we get stuck in colour ruts and end up with a closet full of the same colour. Here are some tips to break the colour pairing boundaries:

Beauty brands have been amplifying their approach to the holidays this year and I could not be more excited. Since we are fastly approaching the gift giving season I wanted to break down the hottest sets and the ones that are going to give you the best value. Whether your style is elegant, natural, glam, or glowing there is seriously a set for every girl.

Secrets For Gorgeous, Full, Lively Hair

4 secrets to gorgeous, full hair- AVEDA texture tonic, LOVEFRESH organic shampoo, AVEDA Abundance Shampoo, Vital Proteins Beauty Boost Capsules

There’s a reason why I don’t share many care hair posts on my blog, especially sponsored posts at that. Companies usually want you to test out the products and within a weeks time detail your findings. Well for me that just isn’t enough time. Sure the first use is always amazing! You’re thinking holy moly this is the greatest shizz on the planet. But you never have enough time to actually see the long-term results... is it overall drying to my scalp? Will it cause my psoriasis to flare up? So unless I truly love something, I don't bother.

Seeing Red

Red for Fall- LOFT red sweater, Zara white leather mini skirt, Zara leather booties , Target faux fur purse, Celine sunglasses
This is groundbreaking news, but I am obsessed with red this fall. I have never, I repeat, never loved the colour red. I was always way to intimidated as a child to wear it because of my hair colour! Isn't that crazy?! It's powerful, sophisticated, bold, bright and basically, screams "stop"! We're not talking muted burgundy, or oxblood, we're going full fledge power red. It is most definitetly the colour of fall and I can't seem to get enough.

So how can you incorporate this power colour into the season and make it your own? Easy!

Clove + Hallow | Clean Beauty Review

Clove + Hallow | A Clean, Vegan Beauty Review (Lip Velvet, Make Up Melt, Correct + Conceal

I was first introduced to Clove + Hallow a few months back when The Truth Beauty Company (a boutique solely selling natural, organic and good-for-you beauty, haircare and skincare products) held a brunch to launch the products into the Toronto scene. Sarah Biggers, founder of Clove + Hallow came all the way from Atlanta to share her inspiring story. When she turned towards the clean beauty world she was not able to find comparable products that offered the bold shades she was used to as well as had the ultimate staying power. Her goal? Combine great beauty products and the holistic world.  I left the brunch so excited about the brand and wearing one of Sarah's Lip Velvet, which is a liquid lip colour. Five hours later (after eating, drinking and wandering the city) I came home with the lipstick still intact. To say I was surprised was an understatement! When does natural, clean lipstick last THIS long?!

Playing Tourist in Le Marais

Paris Flytographer, red beret, strip shirt, engagement, couple in Paris, le marais

When you think of Paris, does it get any more classic than a red beret and a black and white striped shirt? I didn't think so either. I'm all about not being a tourist and experiencing a city like a local. So tell me does this look make me fit in completely or completely stand out as a tourist?! Lol. Either way, it was fun to prance around the city snapping shots in my Parisian best.Today's post is all about the best of the best in Paris. Since we had just got engaged we were flying high on life and love. Not a care in the world. And our visa bills are definitely reflecting this now! If you are looking to live large in Paris I'm sharing my favourite restaurants and bars that we indulged in on our trip. We love the low-key classic Parisian vibes. Think "Midnight in Paris"-- dark rooms, red velvet, and extremely overpriced coupes of Champagne. Don't worry our breakfasts and lunches were basically all purchased at the Monoprix, or little bistros so it made up for it (almost...).

1. Ralph's--This place will always have a special place in our hearts! It was just down the street from our AirBnB so it was always the home of our nightcap. And yes, we're talking Ralph as in the Ralph Lauren. They have a gorgeous courtyard, a stunning rustic interior, they play awesome tunes and will serve you the most addicting caramel popcorn with your drink or coffee. We may have gone here for once or twice just for the popcorn! It's THAT good. Bonus-- the staff were the sweetest and remembered us every time we came in!

 2. Bar Hemmingway-- Okay. You have to go to the Ritz while you are in Paris. I'm still conjuring up a scheme to get into Coco Chanel's apartment! I loved the vibes of Bar Hemmingway. It's so hidden, and not pretentious at all! It's at the back of the hotel and is so small you'll be lucky enough to get a table! The drinks are served with the most stunning roses and the assortment of pre-dinner snacks is basically good enough to count as dinner. Sometimes all you need is an expensive glass of champagne with an assortment of olives, crackers, and nuts. Tip-- head to the restrooms where the faucets are gold swans. Yes, actually.

3. Le George -- You guys... I didn't think a more gorgeous place existed. When you walk into the Four Seasons you will understand why. They literally have thousands of flowers brought in daily and on display. This restaurant is swanky and fabulous, but absolutely delicious. Book reservations and save it for your splurge meal. It will be worth it! Also the bar is so cozy for a pre-dinner drink!

4. Hotel Costes--Can you tell we love little hideout bars? The courtyard restaurant will probably be packed, and I can't speak to the food but the bar at Hotel Costes will make all your Parisian dreams come true. Think red velvet curtains, piano, and more. They even have a flower shop beside the hotel. We loved stopping in here for a pre-dinner glass of champ.

Other fancy places to consider-- The rooftop bar at The Peninsula Hotel (stunning view of the city!), Plaza Athenee, Le Moulin de la Galette

Looking for some cheaper eats: Try La Palette, Pizza Populaire or any restaurant by the Big Mamma Group, Hotel Grand Amour (pink courtyard dreams!), Aloha Cafe, Rose Bakery. Otherwise, picnic with the food at Monoprix! A baguette, some veg, and some sides are all you need!

Looking to satisfy your sweet tooth? Try the chou at Popelini, the waffles at Meert, the hot chocolate at Angelina, and anywhere else that smells divine!

Sidenote-- all restaurants serve a little snack with your drinks! And make reservations!

These photos were taken by Olga of Flytographer. Read my review of Flytographer here.
