The Experience Gift Guide

Is it just me or do you always want to give the best gift?! Something that totally wows and makes your recipient smile from ear to ear? I always try and think of gifts that will last. I love focusing on less material type gifts and more experience based. The possibilities are endless! Because it really is so exciting to have something to look forward to after the holidays! I'm rounding up some fabulous experience type gifts that you should consider this holiday season. It's also great because most of them can be ordered online and printed out. Then you can get creative and wrap them up all fancy. Just don't put a gift card in a huge box... so over that one!

Dermalogica ProSkin Treatment-- there is a reason this isn't called a facial, but a skin treatment. The professionals at Dermalogica are so knowledgeable on skincare! They tailor a completely personalized and customized experience based on your skin needs.  Basically, they tell you exactly what you face needs, they use the most advanced products and get you set up for healthy skin. For someone that is new to skin treatments, or a lover of them, this is the perfect indulgence. So often we are reluctant to spend money on treatments that are perceived as luxuries, but this one is a necessity to really get a deep clean and a rundown on what your skin truly needs (before it's too late)!

Floral Workshops-- a night of fun and florals! Sounds perfect to me! This is such a great gift idea. I mean you get together with some fabulous ladies, learn all the tricks of floral arranging and get to leave with a bouquet you made yourself! These are skills you will have your life and for the one who loves crafting, florals and just is a purveyor of pretty things, the experience will be the best! Wild North Florals has some of the best workshops on how to keep houseplants alive, centrepiece making and DIY terrariums! Also, check out Bloom School.

Cleanse-- after the holidays we could all use a re-set from all the parties, wine, food, and indulgences. It can get to be a lot! I love the Body Reset cleanse from The Fix + Co. because it's not a juice cleanse. If you are like me you just need to chew! I love that this one incorporates meals into the mix that are plant-based, healthy, homemade and super delicious.

Event/Outing-- there are so many events happening around the city. All you need to do is pursue through StubHub or Ticketmaster. Think concerts, sporting matches, even the Jays season pass. I love gifting tickets because it really gives you something to look forward to. And you get to do it together! Another great option is a flight, or gift card to a travel service that you know they'll use. Nothing is better than having a trip to look forward to!

What are some of your favourite alternative gift ideas? I'd love to know!

Easy & Effortless Holiday Entertaining + GIVEAWAY

Easy & Effortless Holiday Hosting, Zwilling Cheese Board and Knife Giveaway, Kelly's Bake Shoppe, The Fix + Co

Holiday hosting... it really is one of my favourite things to do. This year I found myself straying away from the endless planning and all the little details. I love it but it gets so exhausting sometimes. Especially when the days just seem to sneak up on you. You end up running yourself ragged before the event has even started. I didn't want to let that happen this year for my annual girls Christmas party. I wanted to focus on the minimal, and let the conversation, feelings and true meaning of the night speak for itself.

Holiday hosting doesn't have to be intimidating. This year I wanted to show how I cut the frills and fancy and focused on the simple and easy, while not comprising on style and taste! Just a few steps and you can do the same. In turn, you'll have tons more time for your loved ones and enjoy the moments leading up the get-together.

Here's how I made the night hosting easy and effortless in 4 steps:

1. Skip the elaborate dinner and make a charcuterie board. They literally take 10 minutes to put together. I always ask B to run to the store and pick out his favourites since he is a cheese connoisseur. I focus on the little extras-- the crackers, the garnishes, the cute additions. You can put them together in no time whatsoever and they have such great impact, and there is something for everyone. Some veggies, a bit of fruit to mix up the flavours and some nuts to add a crunch. Remember sweet and savoury is key! I pulled out my massive cutting board from Zwilling and went to town, but you can use any size and make it your own! That's the beauty of them. There is no right or wrong way. Just make sure you have a proper cheese knife on hand!

2. Go minimal with the decor. I've done my fair share of the fancy themes... we've done glitzmas and rustic, but this year I went extremely minimal, and it made such an elegant impact. Some simple evergreens (literally cut off from the trees outside), a few candles and my classic gold chargers all came together beautifully. What helps, even more, to add to the decor is having great serving ware. I love Zwilling for this; their styles are so timeless! I usually stick to white and clear and let the food speak for itself.

3. Pick up ready-made eats & treats. The biggest misconception people have is that you can't have quality and delicious food pre-made, or found at a reasonable price. There are so many local eateries that offer catering services that you don't need to stress out over making everything! The Fix + Co put together some of their amazing platters for me that was indeed homemade and delicious. I love knowing that they use premium and local ingredients and that the food is plant-based and organic. They supplied us with an amazing vegan nut cheese (that actually tasted like pizza), vegetable samosas, and a delicious assortment of their sweets (raw balls, chocolate brownies and banana nut cookies).

Speaking of treats!!! It would not be the holidays without a little something from Kelly's Bake Shoppe. Especially my favourite ginger molasses cookie. You guys... I can't even. I ate 3 in one day! They are so good. Everyone loves a treat from Kelly's and I love that they pride themselves on being the healthier bakery, offering vegan, gluten-free, egg-free, dairy-free and peanut free goodies! The Christmas menu is one of my faves of the year! It consists of cupcakes such as pumpkin pie, hot cocoa, gingerbread and lemon, and other goodies like candy cane donuts, and double chocolate peppermint cookies. Mmm just thinking about them is making me want to stop everything I'm doing and place an order for delivery.

Both places deliver making it even easier to host and offer quality food to your guests. No dishes required.

*If you want to wow your guests with an after dinner treat with a bit of a show, make an affogato! Scoop a couple scoops of vanilla bean ice cream into your glass dessert bowl and pour a shot of freshly made espresso over it.

4. Stick to one personalized touch. Don't go crazy trying to pull out all the stops, and this step is totally optional! There are so many simple ways you can show your guests you appreciate them coming without going over the top. Sometimes I try to do too much-- name cards, favours, wine glass tags, etc. But no. This year I opted for something so simple and I thought it was the sweetest gesture! I made DIY Christmas crackers that doubled as seating cards for the table.  I filled the inside with little goodies like candy canes, chocolates and lip sticks. You can find the whole tutorial in my newsletter (subscribe here).

Fringe Cardigan Cool

Gap Loop-Fringe Cardigan, AE denim, Zara boots, grey, Sophie Hulme, How to style a cardigan

I was obsessed with this loop fringe cardigan (on sale!!) from the moment I saw it. But I waited it out... a long while! Finally, when Black Friday rolled around and I saw it at 50% off there was no turning back. I love the relaxed, easy fit and that it feels perfectly tailored to my body. It sits at the hip so it's not too short and on warmer days I can totally get away with wearing it as a light jacket. Do you have any pieces that make you feel instantly cool? I feel like this cardi does that! There is something about it that is kinda crisp, yet sophisticated and paired with a black leather ankle bootie I am ready to rock. Cardigans usually get a bad rep. They can feel stuffy, too boring and unexciting. But if this one shows you anything it's that they can be chic, fun and wicked cool.

So, how to look chic while wearing a cardigan? Here's what I do:

Statement cardigan. Forget the argyle print and go for something totally out there. There are plenty of ways to do this, too! Loop fringe? Yes. Completely oversized and to your knees paired with a mini skirt? Yes. Chunky knits, vibrant colours and patterns all work!

Wear it like a blazer. Think casual and I just threw this on. Pair it with a thin t-shirt underneath and layer with a stack of thin gold necklaces. The longer the cardi the better. I love the look of high waisted denim, a crop top and a long cardigan.

Treat it like a button down. Just make sure it has buttons first (lol), and do them all up. Wear nothing underneath for a semi-risque look. Or try leaving the bottom button undone. Kinda says I'm here to party.

How do you style your cardigans? Do you reserve them for strictly office purposes or will you bring them out on the town?

A Dress for Every Occassion

One thing I love about the holidays is all the fun and festive affairs. But with all the holiday parties come all the holiday party outfits, and that can either be super exciting or super stressful. I like to make it fun and wear things I wouldn't normally wear. I'm talking faux fur stoles, sequins, and lots of lace! Actually... I do wear all these things on the regular, but together makes it all the more festive! I can't wait to wear this dress I bought for Paris this season. I love the lace overlay and the embroidered flowers. If it gets cold I plan to throw on a tight black turtleneck underneath or throw on a pair of tights. One and done! In case you need some holiday party dress inspiration I've rounded up a few favourites, something for every occasion! A knit turtleneck dress for the office luncheon, a cocktail number for a night out celebrating, and some fun jumpsuits. Who doesn't love jumpsuits! What are you planning on wearing to your events? Any ideas yet?

Accessorizing with Jewel Tones

Wearing Jewel Tones, Sophie Hulme, Denim, Leather Coat, emerald earrings

I've never been one to dabble in the jewel tones. You guys know me... I'm all about the pastels. But, I love the look of jewel tones! There's the emerald green, the amethyst, ruby, topaz-- they are so beautiful! So royal and deep.  I was gifted these earrings by a loved one for a very special reason and ever since then, I've been drawn to the colours more and more.  You're probably thinking "where!". But if you look closely you'll see I'm starting off slow! At least it's a start.  I love that in adding a topaz coloured scarf, a pair of emerald earrings, and a ruby bangle I instantly adding drama to an otherwise simple, go-to, outfit. Breaking into new colours seems like it's becoming a bit of a trend for me! If there are any colours you are hesitant about trying out you need to read this post. It's all about colour combining and embracing the unconventional.

What's your take on jewel tones? Do you dig 'em? (pun intended)
