Tastes of Autumn

Fall desserts : apple chip, caramel apples, fall brunch, pumpkin cookies and latte

I'm definitely one who loves the sights, tastes and sounds of autumn. The foliage changing colours, the tastes of cinnamon, spiced apple, and nutmeg, and the crisp sound of leaves crunching beneath your boots; I love it all! In light of fall's arrival last week I am rounding up some of favourite fall themed recipes on P&P that you should definitely bookmark and try out this weekend.

Treat yourself to a moist, dense, and delicious white chocolate pumpkin cookie and a homemade pumpkin pie latte on the side. Better yet, whip up a whole pumpkin inspired brunch at home complete with pumpkin pancakes, banana-almond butter bites, maple glazed turkey bacon, and those fantastic cookies and lattes you just made! Heading to the orchard sometime soon? You're bound to have countless leftover apples. I give you two options: the healthy alternative, scrumptious apple chips lightly doused in cinnamon (which I am now addicted too), or the classic caramel apple. The choice is yours!

Big Apple Red

Since I was only in NYC for a few days and I prefer to travel with carry on luggage only, (thanks Joëlle for the toiletry packing tips), packing was kept to a minimal. For my one vibrant piece I chose this red skirt. Easily transitioned from day to night with a new pair of heels, but for day-time adventures I kept it simple with a versatile white tank, and minimal accessories. We kicked off the morning with breakfast at Bluestone Lane Collective Cafe, and then headed to Chelsea Market, not before grabbing another cup of coffee in the heart of the Meatpacking District. I love the Meatpacking District for the High Line and shopping, but had never ventured into Chelsea Market. I already can't wait to get back here! The food scene is insane, and the shops are a plenty!

Simple in SoHo

Fall style and summer temperatures in SoHo

New York City was perfect. The weather was incredible, the food was delicious and the company was oh so lovely. I just love the energy of that city; it's so rejuvenating and inspiring! After jumping off our plane and checking into our hotel (where I ran into Aimee Song!), we spent the rest of the day wandering through the streets of SoHo, checking out our favourite spots and discovering some new ones. Since the weather was stifling I opted for my go-to cross-season pairing-- shorts and booties. It's a perfect way to start breaking into your autumn wardrobe all while ensuring you won't be sweating your jeans off.  I'm also obsessed with army green as of late; the colour has literally besieged my wardrobe! To complement the fall colours I whipped out an old Longchamp tote to carry all the necessities around town with me. They are just classic and so functional! I do love travelling with cross-bodies but these cameras are just too bulky! And you all know this girl loves snapping photos!

What do you think of the booties and shorts look? And, yes,  this topic has been brought up before, but what are tips for travelling with large cameras?

More from NYC soon!

Royal Blue

Blue dress- Winery Wedding Attire

Do you ever have serious hair goals or some major up-do aspirations for events? And you think you can do it yourself but end up failing miserably and have to resort to your usual hair style? Tell me I'm not the only one! Pretty twist? Sweet chignon? Yup-- I tried it all this past weekend for the winery wedding I attended. I also procrastinated on my outfit selection and went with something simple, and what I thought was a crisp colour pallet for fall, a royal blue dress paired with mixed metals. Apparently I wasn't the only one feeling the colour because at least five other ladies were wearing this exact shade of blue. Seriously, we could have made up our own bridal party! However, the night was lovely; it rained, the sun came out, the most gorgeous double rainbow popped out of the clouds, and I indulged in far too many s'mores from the fire pit. Since I have another wedding in a few weeks feel free to pass along any great hair tutorials. I should probably start practicing...

Retro on Top

Pastels & Pastries- laser cut crop top

September may be here but the hot and humid temperatures have been lingering, which I don't mind one bit! I scored this perforated crop top at the Haight & Ashbury summer sale, and I'm loving how it's proving to be a true transitional piece for fall. White is an all seasons staple colour for me; it's so versatile and I love pairing it with brights and darks alike. This past weekend I went with a classic black and white ensemble to try out Kasa Moto, Yorkville's newest Japanese restaurant; the shirt didn't disappoint for the occasion, and neither did the sushi!

How do you adapt your summer wardrobe for fall?

Coconut Cupcakes with Coconut Buttercream

Are you ready for the most coconut-ey coconut cupcake recipe ever? Prepare yourself, because these cupcakes seriously pack the most velvety, rich coconut flavour, and the buttercream is just fluffy, whipped perfection. I made these over the long weekend for a true coconut lover and they did not disappoint. I don't consider myself a coconut fan (I would rather have chocolate or funfetti any day),  but I found myself literally licking the buttercream out of the bowl! The cake is moist and flavourful and the sweet flavour in the buttercream is on point without being too overpowering.

I chose the recipe from A Farmgirl's Dabbles for many reasons. Her description sounded divine, the recipe seemed straightforward, and I loved the way she topped the cupcakes with a mound of buttercream and a sprinkle of coconut chips, which by the way are so addictive! The instructions were so detailed -whipping the butter for 8 minutes is key- and the recipe was super simple to follow.

You can find the recipe here, and I've also included some of my findings below…a few cut corners never hurt, right?

My Tips:
1. I used unsweetened shredded coconut in the cupcakes as I knew the buttercream would be pretty sweet. I would not have wanted the cake any sweeter.
2. The buttercream recipe calls for 2 tablespoons of Half & Half, which I don't keep on hand. I was not ready to go out and purchase a carton for 2 tablespoons, so I opted for regular milk and all was perfect. Feel free to use your regular 2% milk.
3. Don't have a cookie scoop but still want the perfect mound of buttercream on top? I used my 1/4 cup measuring cup to scoop up the icing and plop it on top of the cupcake. It takes a little bit of shaping but it worked for me!
4. The coconut chips really complete the look and add a nice texture to the cupcake! You can find them in the bulk food section or any health food store.
